NOTE : Most of us would prefer that you used an approved radio
for PMR446. Mention of any expandable amateur transceivers will be made
solely for any interest value, and ONLY if they are unlikely to cause any problems :
o their power output is 500mW or less at 446MHz,
o they feature the 6.25kHz steps required,
o they can look the part,
o they can be reset if 'someone' wants a close look :o)
... if you must use one please keep your modulation low to protect adjacent
channels and don't use too much power or gainy antennas in busy areas.
Please treat the PMR446 service with respect!
NOTE 2 : Many radios are manufactured for both PMR446 and FRS, and there are
very few differences apart from cosmetic ones and channel frequencies. To see
the wide range of FRS radios please check out
epinions.com (all 2 way)
epinions.com (2 miles)

http://www.provide.net/~prsg/frs-home.htm
FRS radios are submitted to the FCC for approval. The http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid website may contain various interesting documents for any particular model - pictures, test reports, circuit diagrams, manuals etc. Click "Equipment Authorization Search", and FRS radios are mainly the Equipment Class "FRF -Part 95 Family Radio Face Held Transmitter".
NOTE 3 : It can be difficult to tell just who makes radios, and where. Just because
a 446 radio has "BigNameCom" on it, they may have just added their name to a radio
built the other side of the world. Any information on this sort of thing would be
appreciated. Even when you discover some far east company that supplies radios for
western companies to put their name on, the actual manufacture of the radios can
be subcontracted out to yet another company.. which mentions it on their website
and things get very confusing!
When a radio is available under different brand names, the first one that comes to my notice gets all the specifications listed, and further clones all refer back to the 'original'. I will try and give pointers in BOTH directions so you can see which radios are the same as yours. If the original model is no longer made, or the actual manufacturer is discovered, an update may occur!
NOTE 4 : Headset connections. There are various 'standards', although
you can never be totally sure without reading the manual or asking those
who know! Examples :
(Cellphone (VOX) : 2.5mm stereo, tip mic, mid spkr, gnd)
ham speakermic, dual jacks 10mm spaced (PTT) : 3.5mm mono spkr, 2.5mm mic
(8mm spaced for Motorola, 12mm (+Stereo) for Kenwood)
2.5mm stereo : tip spkr, mid mic, gnd (Motorola plugs 2mm longer!)
3.5mm stereo : tip mic, mid spkr, gnd
- Radio headsets either designed for VOX (no PTT, mic audio always connected),
or PTT (a couple of k Ohms resistance between mic and gnd switches TX)

"it's an excellent radio, has 20 memories plus calling channel (programmable). Has sub-tone scan, channel scan and memory scan. A button to un-mute the squelch, back lit display that can be set to stay on or turn off automatically. And... loads more things... it makes all the others look a bit silly at the price. Oh yes, high and low power setting, receive alarm etc etc etc...
Get one, they are excellent... and sensitive too.

As well as the 10mW 433MHz 4008E and the FRS 4008A model, Icom make a version of this for the US Military
(Intra-Squad Radios) after having won the contract in 2000 to supply more than 13,000 units.
The radios feature 14 channels ranging from 396.875 in order up to 399.975 MHz (no fixed steps),
12.5kHz FM, < 500mW.
"The IC-4008M has a cast aluminum case, is rated JIS-5 for water resistance and is MILSPEC 810C, D and E compliant.
It supports 38 CTCSS tones and runs on three AA's or a $10.88 nicad pack."

The IC-R2 scanner is one of the first very small well regarded scanners that covers PMR446 channels correctly with 6.25kHz steps (bandwidth still not right though). Scan/search speed at 10 steps a second isn't great but usable. A radio amateur version called the Q7E will allow transmit at less than 500mW levels on 145 and 433MHz, at the expense of HF and the number of memories - this means you can scan away wherever you are and if asked about it... it's innocent - "It's an amateur radio walkie-talkie, Officer!". The USA version, the Q7A starts looking interesting for PMR446, as their amateur band goes up to 450MHz. The bandwidth may be wrong, but I'm sure some people wouldn't hesitate to use it. Default tuning steps will be different though, we prefer 12.5kHz over here - and the American cell-phone bands at 800MHz are blocked. This 3-in-1 could suit many people, scanner with ham radio and PMR446 available if really needed - if you can import one or persuade your dealer that you travel to the states often and need the extra coverage. The ultimate for some people would be a Q7E with a full transmit coverage modification as detailed at http://www.mods.dk - which seems very daunting to an electronics novice! - can be supplied by dealers if you know where to ask nicely, according to some recent mailing list postings ...
... IC-Q7E
EXTERNAL PIC (OR
LOCAL)
30-1300MHz FM/AM/FMW scanner, extendable transmit from 70cm to 470MHz (and 136-174MHz).
6.25kHz steps for precise 446 channels. Scans all 8 channels per second. Selectivity quite good.
Roughly 200mW output reported, some 3dB down (half an S-point). Can be reset with certain keys held at power-up.
With a shorter antenna it could certainly pass for a 446 radio.
Good: 50 CTCSS, black, S-meter, frequency display :o)
Bad : often needs two hands for the stupidly difficult to use and press function key
and the PTT needs force too. SMA antenna connector, single 3.5mm speaker mic socket (4 way - hard to find
leads - try SL4 at http://www.eastlondoncommunications.co.uk/smcurlies.htm )
Batts: 2AA (no power or charge sockets at all)
A promising jack-of-all-trades (but master of none). See NOTE at top of page

"quite small and light ... support power saving ... simple controls
...you can turn CTCSS off ... support channel scan and tone scan ...
useful for CB like communications ... channel scan to scan for activity, then you can listen in
on tone 0, use tone scan to find the tone ... they look and feel cheaply made ...
only problem I have found with them is that the mic isn't very sensitive. To get good modulation you
have to hold the mic about 4 cm from your mouth.
The batteries don't seem to last very long, but this is a compromise with being small (AAA batteries).
... overall I am pleased with my purchase of the Telcoms."

The main difference that you are observing is due to the FR60 doing squelch detection in hardware and the T289 doing squelch detection in software. To lessen the effect, try higher frequency CTCSS codes like 30 -> 38. Theo. |

uk.rec.radio.cb re: T5512
I was interested to read on the certificate of conformity that these radios are actually made for Motorola by Maxon - can anyone confirm whether this is true of the T6222 as well? The control system is a bit fussy. Why can't + and - step through the channels without having to press Menu first? Selecting the CTCSS code is painfully slow - you can hold down + or - but the repeat speed is too slow. The scan/monitor button releases the squelch but you have to press it for 2 seconds which is too long. To listen with the squelch open you must keep holding that button down which is a bit inconvenient if you are trying to copy a weak station for an long time. The squelch setting is apparently not adjustable and seems to be too high - quite readable signals keep cutting in and out. An undocumented feature is that you can turn off the extremely annoying key-beeps by holding down "-" as you switch on. Roger bleeps are turned off by holding down + whilst switching on. The manual describes that. -- Steve |

"The combination of a more sensitive receiver and a lower squelch level makes this radio a real winner." ..."all users reported excellent audio. There were many times when the T6222 received a load clear signal and my Goodman's Tracker remained silent!" ... "neat, well designed radio ... very easy to use ... The performance on RX and TX is excellent". Another : "Nice solid construction, Great range, Vibra alert, signal strength meter, drop in charger and many more."
However.. a 60 second TX timeout could be awkward (see note at end of Motorola section), and
"Although they work extremely well electronically their physical quality is spoilt..
The ultra lightweight battery cover and catch - the slightest pressure on the button can spring it loose..
the buttons are both incredibly thick and inflexible and unecessarily small, making them feel genuinely unpleasant
in use.. the belt clip is a fairly flimsy, mechanically complicated affair..
the set is a fairly uncomfortable shape, quite narrow, bulbous and fat from front to back so
it feels like you're holding a small pear.. quite difficult to stand one up vertically, almost as difficult as standing a coin on edge..
you have to press and hold a button to see a numeric signal reading, unlike some of the other sets which have a more traditional
(and sensible) bargraph S-meter which is always 'on' in the receive mode..
despite all this, the radio is worth having for its features and performance as a radio."

Notes
WARNING - Motorola FRS & PMR446 radios use audio companding (COMpression/exPANDING)
for noise reduction, improving the audio Signal to Noise Ratio under marginal conditions.
This sort of noise reduction system is also used on :
HiFi Stereo VHS tapes
some cordless phones
BTSC/MTS TV sound transmission
Panda system (analogue satellite FM sound carriers, e.g. Astra in Europe)
dbx (audio cassettes - relatively rare)
see http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/audio/tape4.html
Companding makes the transmitted compressed signal sound very loud and punchy on normal radios (good for DX) but reception of signals from those other radios on a Motorola will be expanded when they shouldn't be - sounding dull and dynamically very odd. "I have a Motorola Handie-Pro and the received audio from other makes sounds as if there is a sock stuffed in the speaker. The transmitted audio is loud and crisp." - Jack.
Nice marketting ploy I suppose, Motorola owners will think other brands are rubbish and buy more Motorolas...
Motorola tend to use a 60 second TX time-out, which makes them unsuitable
for gateways (XTN 446, T5512, T6222... ). With some models however, by using Test Mode normal
operation is possible WITHOUT time-outs. To enter this mode, "hold down the 'Menu' and '+'
buttons while turning the radio on. You may get a 'ring' tone which indicates
the radio has powered up in Test Mode. Pressing the '-' button will cause it to test
every segment in the LCD display."
Not ideal, but a workable fix for gateways. So far found to work with the T5412, T5512, but not
the XTN or T6222.
"During one of the regulatory compliance lab tests on the T5950 prototype unit (USA FRS),
the test procedure requires the radio to be placed in transmit mode and transmit continuously
until the batteries are flattened. The prototype unit is put in test mode for the lab test.
The output power vs. battery voltage as the batteries go down is closely monitored and recorded.
I suspect the same test mode is also used at the factory for testing and alignment during the
manufacturing process." - thanks N1DAS
However, the MultiCOM junior is a rebadged J-com, and the MultiCOM Plus and Pat are TTi radios! The plot thickens when you realise TTi have models 101, 201, 301, 701 etc., and the Multicom Pro fits in the gap, having a 401 model number. This one's going to puzzle me for years, I can tell.

Previously Oregon had suggested the keypad lock sequence was : ".. lock or unlock the TP326 by using the UP/DOWN button to avoid accidental pressing. Then, press and hold down MONI(SHIFT), then press CALL (VOX) to lock or unlock the keys."
The new ones (Serial 303 etc.) have a small hole inside the bottom of the battery compartment with a picture of a padlock. Pushing a paperclip into it toggles the DISPLAY through FM (stereo) and MW!" (No evidence of the broadcast band receive circuitry evident in the American models)
"the little hole accesses a membrane switch and any sharp object poked in here may damage the switch, especially given frequent use."
"If you tap a paperclip onto the switch in the hole, it toggles the "radio" FM and MW modes, and then back to normal. If you HOLD the paperclip in for a couple of seconds, the Keylock symbol comes on, and the keys are locked, but it does not have to display the FM or MW details."
"has a clock, this is not backed up and has to be reset each time the batteries are changed."
"The radios have a single 2.5mm stereo jack socket with connections tip=ear-piece, mid=mic, shield=common return. Annoyingly, what appears to be a 3.5mm battery charge socket (i don't know the polarity or voltage level yet) is beside the 2.5mm socket at about the right distance to make it look like a dual headset jack input."
"I tested the larger jack socket. It's stereo and the barrel is ground as expected. The tip and ring don't connect to anything. There is a redundant charge circuit weaving its way upwards towards the tip from the +ve battery terminal and has unoccupied positions for a diode and resistor/fuse along the way, also a pair of decoupling capacitors to ground. I'm just about to pop an IN4001 in there and a 600mA fuse which should do the trick. This is a nice easy mod which should only take 10mins and cost 50p. The socket will then accept a 6.8v source, current limited to 55mA which will give a 12hour slow charge."
"Incidentally, the radio draws 40mA with the receiver muted or scanning and 340mA under transmit. When not in scan mode, the power save mode comes in after around 8 seconds with the usual mark/space ratio of 1/5"
Fairly robust build quality, sensitive, and good audio.
The cheap price has led to a cult following, with mods available :

Delboy's review : http://www.delboyenterprises.co.uk/telcom_te200_review.htm
"Seem to have equal if not better range than my older Telcom TW1000 sets, audio not as crisp but more "lifelike" on the 200's. Very good value" ... "the only thing wrong with them is the battery life" (AAA)
Some problems have been noted with units losing their programming and defaulting
to the 14 USA FRS channels - rendering them useless in Europe. Can happen when a
power-on glitch resets the circuitry.
"The radio does not have an auto shut off point when the batteries get low. It stays
on until every last drop of power is taken from the batteries. Bad for the batteries and the radio!
I suspect that the EPROM which stores the frequencies must wipe itself when this happens!"
see
(www.network54.com Forum message)
"reprogramming telcom te 200 (FRS back to PMR), by paul usher
the fix was to reprogramme it by linking jp3
then powering up - gives a display of 0 to 3.
Select 0 then power off normally, remove link,
thats it all back to normal. You may wish to see what the other
numbers do, it's fun and safe.
Jp3 jumper pads are located just below the tx button, take care not
to short to the tin screen!"

One reviewer writes "Distorted audio.. Vox does not appear to work on mic jack regardless of eQSO settings.. The display sometimes fails to come or goes garbled when the machine is picked up... Noise breaks through even though CTCss is set... problems were the same on both.. build quality is very poor" - whereas Delboy liked his! http://www.delboyenterprises.co.uk/446_2002/xt1000_pmr_446_review.htm
"the volume level adjustment doesn't 'do' low, and even at the lowest setting it is just too loud! There is no way to set it at a reasonable listening level for normal home use. Loud audio might be fine in warehouse or whatever, but you want to be able to set it to low for other uses. Wouldn't have bought the XT1000 had I have known about this "feature" beforehand. I also find the audio quality to be a little muffled and not as clear as it might be."

"At first sight they seem every bit as good as, or better than, the other radios I have experienced such as Audiovox, Eurowave, Telcom 100 and Binatone 100. They come with a wide selection of ring tones, vox,an "unscrambling device", and a "bug detector"! The audio quality is good for such a budget unit and compares favourably with my 70cms amateur radio hand-helds. Standard AAA cells can be used, making sure of course that one doesn't drop the radio into the charger with these type fitted! The battery packs appear to be unique, consisting of four AAA Ni-Cds strapped together. The output of the pack using two of the cell terminals for connecting to the radio." - Tom
Sadly, CTCSS is not filtered from earphone audio *hum!*
Push-once PTT : "switch on and hold the PTT button, there will now be a little arrow at
the bottom left of the screen. When you talk, you can let go of the PTT and it will still
transmit, then when you press it next time it will stop transmitting.
To put it back to normal mode, switch off & back on."

This page is a guide, maintained by an enthusiast, and MAY contain errors no matter how hard I try.
(It wouldn't hurt to tell me!) I do my best, but do your own research also!
For the radio enthusiast, attempting to DX, scan and use PMR446 as a CB band, we'd prefer the unit to resemble an amateur radio, so we'd like the above and also:
The candidates so far are...
.. none yet .. still waiting!
